THE ISSUE: A group of Hermitage residents found that the community wanted and would greatly benefit from replacing its natural grass field at Hickory High School with a synthetic turf system. The durability and versatility offered by synthetic turf would broaden the field’s use beyond high school athletic games and practices to band competitions, youth programs and community events. It would be, as the group called it, “a field for all.”
Additionally, it would improve athlete safety, reduce maintenance costs and allow for revenue-generating events such as playoff games and summer athletic camps. |
THE JOB: The crew from Sports Construction Group, the field construction experts, began by excavating the natural grass field. A high-end drainage system was installed to allow for rapid removal of rainwater and thus minimize weather delays or cancellations. The sub base was then constructed and leveled off using precise laser-guided equipment.
Finally, SCG topped off the field with Shaw Sportexe OmniGrass 41, one of the safest synthetic turf systems available. Made with Shaw Sportexe’s exclusive Strenexe fiber, OmniGrass is soft, yet exceptionally durable. With a 2-inch pile height, OmniGrass 41 delivers consistent performance for sports where ball control is essential.
In addition, SCG also constructed a new 8-lane running track for the stadium.
THE RESULTS: The field was completed in time for the start of the fall athletics season and the Hornets varsity football team christened the field with a 42-12 victory over the West Middlesex Big Reds. |
