As you consider the option of purchasing a new sports facility, we’ve developed a step-by-step crash-course to help you with the process:

Step 1 | Evaluate
Prior to choosing a company to manage your field project, determine your needs and consider the following:

What is your budget?
What sport/activity will use the surface?
How much space do you have to work with?
Do you require ongoing field maintenance?
What are some types of regional environmental factors?
What type of facility features do you need/require? Such as: parking, bleachers, locker rooms, concessions, etc.
Does an indoor or outdoor field best suit your program?
Will your field be used year-round or seasonally; daily or periodically?
What type of warranty is offered on the work and materials? 

Step 2 | Research
Only the best products and most qualified contractors will make sure your field system delivers the years of excellent performance you expect. Sports fields are a big investment and it’s important to do your homework before contacting a field provider. We recommend examining the fields of the programs in your area and asking about the products they’ve chosen and contractors they’ve hired. Compare service and product costs and check references.

Step 3 | Test
After you’ve assessed your needs and explored product and contractor options, the next step is to get a site survey and soil borings. These tests will provide information on the ability of the soil to undergo construction and how well the site will support a stable facility. With these results, contact contractors to obtain an estimate for your site and scope of work. The most accurate and efficient quotes are based on these test results; however, if you aren’t able to obtain this information, historical pricing methods can be applied to provide you with an appropriate estimate. 

Step 4 | Choose
Each stage of construction demands skilled contractors prepared to provide precise results and appropriately address challenges. SCG frequently acts as a general contractor, responsible for sub base and site work, in addition to supplying and installing the turf. 

Sub Base
Sub base work often requires veteran experts that can properly construct a base that’s set to last 30 or more years – or long enough to host three or four synthetic turf installations. There are only a select group of qualified contractors in the U.S. who are capable of providing the expertise needed to construct a well-built sub base. A quality sub base is one that will ensure proper drainage, provide a stable, level platform and prove to be durable enough to sustain snow removal or maintenance equipment and multiple surface installations. It is one of the single most important aspects to prolonging the years of your facility. SCG uses special laser guided equipment, specific to sub base work and field system construction, to make sure all levels of the build are completed to the highest standards. The most important point to remember when choosing a contractor is whether or not you feel you can trust them to provide a system that will last.

Step 5 | Expect
Your contractor should frequently provide updates on the progress of your project and encourage your involvement at every stage. SCG uses a four pronged management approach to collect ongoing project information, oversee day to day operations and keep you informed on the status of your field.

1. An in-house estimator evaluates and micromanages your project from bidding through installation and is in charge of materials, logistics and upholding deadlines.

2. The vice president of operations contacts you daily, via phone or email, to provide updates and maintain lines of communication.

3. An onsite supervisor utilizes his years of on-the-job experience to maintain project budgets and timelines.

4. Salesmen stay integrated throughout every phase of construction to ensure the products received were exactly the products purchased.
